HIV RNA PCR?
I have a question about my last test. I had extreme symptoms related to HIV. Skin rash, weight loss, KS-looking injuries. 3 weeks of exposure neg elisa. 6 weeks of exposure DNA PCR neg. 13 weeks of exposure neg elisa. PCR RNA 16 weeks returned with a measure less than 400 copies per ml. My doctor told me that a negative result. But my question is if negative, should not be reported as zero copies per ml? Someone know ?????
If there are fewer than 400 copies of HIV in 1 ml of blood, and the PCR test is not always able to detect this low level (400 copies of the virus in 1 ml of blood is a lot lower – a viral infection itself could be thousands, milions or more copies of the virus in 1 ml of blood). So the test can not guarantee that they are zero virus, only less than 400 today. It remains a very sensitive test.
