Biomarkers can identify Alzheimer's disease
Long before symptoms become visible in Alzheimer's disease, blood protein specific and cerebrospinal fluid begin to retire, which could be used as biomarkers to monitor their progress. Screening patients in the clinic "silent" phase could come out of the routine tests such as mammograms and colonoscopies as a common tool for prevention medicine.
Familial Alzheimer (FAD) and sporadic Alzheimer's disease are two main types of the disease. Most of these cases are sporadic, developing after age 65. Causes such diseases are not fully understood. FAD is a rare variant caused by certain gene mutations that affects less than two percent of Alzheimer patients.
FAD is early development before the age of 65, and is inherited, all descendants of the same generation have a 50-50 chance of developing FAD if one of their parents had. Markers the researchers tracked came from people with the FAD mutations, Eurekalet reports. "Knowing that 50 percent of first-degree relatives will inherit the same rare mutations, we studied the biochemical changes that occur in the cerebrospinal fluid, Dr. John Ringman, co-author the study.
